Parental Bill of Rights: Model Policy

The Colts Neck Board of Education has produced a Parent's Bill of Rights.  This comprehensive document simply states the rights parents already have under existing district policies and federal law. It ensures transparency, communication, and respect for parents as primary decision-makers by clearly outlining parents’ rights to information about curriculum, student records, health-related issues, safety, privacy, and meaningful involvement in their child’s education. This policy does not change curriculum or promote any ideology.  Instead, it strengthens trust and partnership between schools and families by making expectations clear and ensuring parents are fully informed and included.

We encourage all districts to consider implementing the same or similar policy.  Access the full document here with clickable links to all supporting content.

Then below you will find a downloadable copy of the Parental Bill of Rights to keep or share as well as copies of two sample letters that individuals can send to their school principal and to their local Board of Education to encourage adoption of this policy.
